IDK why, I get the feeling one of the Seven Deadly sins betrayed them. Who else would be able to kill the leader of the Holy Knights without anyone knowing?
If I have to guess, I'll go with the guy they said was dead (King/Sloth or something?), because one is in prison and the others are on the run. Seems pretty convenient if the others thought he was dead.
